““When you eat on the same floor, hunger stops being someone else’s problem.””
The kitchen at Kishangarh opened at 11:04 on a Tuesday. Kamala-bai came in at 11:07. She was the third woman to be plated — not third in a queue, because there was no queue, but third in the small arc of chairs around the low wooden takhat where the volunteers had laid out steel thalis.
For seven years, she said, she had eaten only after everyone else had. In the family, in the neighbourhood, in the temple. Head lowered, small portion, sitting on the corner of a step. It was not a rule anyone spoke. It was just what a widow did.
Today, at the community kitchen, someone brought her a plate first. She said the dal was hot. She said she cried. She said she came back the next day.
